Another option, which I haven't tried yet but plan to is the 1hr photo shop
in a mall near here* which has a do-it-yourself kiosk containing an enclosed
PC running Win3.1, a scanner, a floppy drive, a CD drive, and a photo
quality (dye sub?) printer. One evening when I was there I stopped by, the
staff didn't know anything about it ("our supplier just put it there"), so I
played around with it. As a test I scanned in a piece of green paper with
lots of fine detail printing which I happened to have in my pocket. The
printed output was incredibly good. I also played around with the software
which does rotate, crop, shade/color adjustment, etc. I was able to load in
various .bmp files from Win3.1 off the computer's hard disk and manipulate
them. So, I'm thinking I could put some images on a floppy or CD-R as .bmp
files and take them down there to print. It may take jpeg etc too, I had no
way to determine that. I'm interested if anyone else has done this and has
suggestions for optimising the output. The price was $12 for an 8x10 sheet
so I'm not inclined to do too many test runs. However if I could find out
the file size limits of the machine and the # of pixels per inch of output I
could maybe use Corel to pack a number of test images into one large image
filling an 8x10 sheet then go print that. Suggestions?
