If I can jump in here, I'll mention a couple of brands for under $1K
that work quite well for "proof" prints and sometimes better than that.
I have an HP 855C and an Epson Stylus Pro. Both of these are "last
generation" printers, yet they work quite well most of the time. The two
most common problems are (1) blotchy or banded color (especially on
solid black) and (2) burnishing at some places in bands parallel to the
motion of the printhead.

My experience underscores Jon's in that heavy glossy paper produces MUCH
better quality than lighter stuff. Unfortunately, the heavier the paper,
the more likely I am to get the burnishing bands. I assume that this is
because the thick paper has trouble going around the tight radius of the
paper advance roller that is required by the design of these printers.
The new generation Epsons, I notice, have an almost straight-through
paper path (like Canon, etc), which should do away with the burnishing
problem. I'm not quite ready to upgrade yet, but I'll certainly get a
machine with as straight a paper path as possible next time.

My suspicion regarding the blotchy color problem is that it is caused by
plugging of the jets. My reason for this suspicion is the fact that the
first print out of the machjine after a week or so of inactivity is
usually the worst; the second, third, etc, are usually much better.

Clear skies!
Bert
