Hi John, sorry to read (archives) about your lx200 problem. I hope the
fix goes OK. Sounds like the guts had problems when you bought
it. These things are too complicated to easily check out to avoid
all potential problems like that.
I would like you to forward the following clock comment to MAPUG
since I can't get myself resubscribed to MAPUG at this site. Thanks.
----------------
Chris Vedeler's comments are on-target, in my opinion. The lx200
clock was added to the design as a minor convenience, according to
Meade VP Ron Ezra, and it has no important effect on scope alignment
or function. I've done the test Chris suggests, and he is right,
a large clock error has no detectable effect after the usual star
alignment is done. That confirms Ron Ezra's claim. During one of
the first "clock" threads on MAPUG, Ron, in a moment of exasperation,
said that Meade never would have added the local clock chip at all
if they had been able to guess how much misunderstanding and
complaining it would generate. There is no need to "suffer" from
the inaccurate local time clock on an lx200. Just recognize that
the lx200 is a telescope rather than a wristwatch. It might help to
view the inaccurate local clock as a beauty mark rather than part of
a conspiracy to undermine science and mankind.
All that said, I should mention, as a fan of the "no-star" alignment
(point it south and power up - the PISAPU altaz alignment), that
the local clock DOES affect that "illegitimate" type of alignment.
Forewarned is forearmed - go forth and stargaze with passion.
