This is a big deal. Altaz operation is a lot easier. No messy polar
alignment (altaz alignment takes only a minute or two). Much more stable
mechanically.

Well, not really. A Messier Marathon requires you to make some
observations early in the evening, some during the night and some just
before dawn. You might be able to catch a few hours of sleep in the middle
of the night but you're still gonna have to be up before dawn :-(

The noise is a serious disadvantage, IMHO. Even the noise it makes while
simply tracking in altaz mode bothers me a little.
