Actually you can train the Smart Drive (PEC) on the LX200 to about 5 arc
seconds with a bit of care. Some have reported more and some less as I
recall. The training is a very important aspect of getting the RA drive to
be smooth. If your RA spur gear is failry good, and I think most are, you
should definitely do the training. I have used one learn and two updates
typically and found it good.
The 216XT is actually a fine guider. Even in stand along mode it is fairly
good. But I feel it should be run by software. Unfortunately the Meade
PictorView does not work in the computer controlled guiding mode the last
time I tried it. But the software written by SSC company which is DOS
based does work. I have tested it and estimate that it is about 5 times as
sensitive as the guide along mode. Thus it gives a very tight control of
the pointing of the telescope. Meade has recognized the need for the SSC
program, so, the last time I looked, they had a link to the SSC company
where you will find the program.
The program will also work under a DOS window under WIN95. In poth cases,
WIN and DOS you need to provide extended memory. If you use DOS you can do
it in the CONFIG.SYS file. If you use WIN95 you can do this in the
Properties box for the DOS window.
If you have troubles with this, I think it is all explained in the SCC
READ.ME file. I also have more information on the setup on my web site
somewhere. If you need more help post me privately and I will be happy to
help. When this is all working well you will be very happy with the 216XT
as a guider. The SSC program is very nice.
