This may be a silly question------but would it be satisfactory to use a
fresh cut tree stump for a pier. I am going to build an observatory on my
property. I was out today playing around with placement ideas. As it turns
out, right where I would want my pier to be now stands an oak tree that is
approx 16-20" diameter. If the tree were dismembered to the correct height,
why not mount some type of plate and wedge to it. I would think not much
ringing to this pier. How fast does a chopped off oak decay? Anyway, please
pass along your thoughts. (no this is not a joke, just sounds like one) >>
Been there, done that. <g>. Actually, I presently have ... and have had for a
long time ... a tree stump pier. It is solid as a rock! No vibrations, even
when I pound on the platform that is bolted to the top of it... upon which,
the wedge for my LX200 is mounted.
But a word of caution. That stump will "weep" for at least a year. Also, it
will continue to grow and throw things out of alignment, for the same period
of time. However, once it has settled down, it is pretty hard to beat!!
