After reading this post in detail, I would caution that it is three
years old and could use a bit of updating. It is basically correct but
the section on motors is not as correct as one might like in 1998.
Circuitry for DC drives is in some ways not as difficult to design as
that for steppers. Drives can be made in many ways. I suspect that far
and away most amateur drives are synchronous motors.
The Meade design is in some ways a very fine and sophisticated design.
If carried out well, it will do everything. In fact it does do
everything when it is working properly.
Stepper motors are only now becoming more common. I do not believe they
have yet reached maturity in telescope applications.
