Hi Bill, mechanical and electrical rotations give different noises
on the RA (at least on my '94 vintage 8"f10). If the RA clutch is released
completely and I rotate the OTA by hand, I can hear obvious gear tooth
noise. But if the clutch is engaged, that noise is negligible compared to
the motor noise (at least during the faster three slew speeds). During sidereal
rate motion, the scope is almost but not quite totally silent - if I listen
carefully, I can hear what are probably drive rate correctional pulse
trains being applied to the motor/gears. The noise that you hear might be
normal,
depending on the exact circumstances. Your description would need to be more
precise to evaluate it properly.
