The origin of the carrot story dates back to the early days of WWII. Radar,
or RDF as it was called in those days, was used by the British to detect
enemy aircraft through the Home Chain network. At that time it was a big
secret, even although Germany and the US also had radar they did not use it
for this purpose but rather for direction finding, hence RDF (Radio
Detection Finding) designation. The Germans couldn't figure out how,
whenever they raided England they were always met by a squadron of
Spitfires, even at night! In order to disguise the fact that Radar was
effective in actually detecting airborne objects, some bright spark let out
a somewhat less than plausible, but effective (people still believe it to
this day!) answer that British pilots dined on raw carrots to improve their
night vision.
