While you're here, how about checking out the
Astronomy Book
List ? |
Thanks for all the suggestions about what is causing the film to accumulate
on my corrector plate. I beleive this film is a oily deposit that comes from
a combination of tree oils, pollution and dirt. One explaination is that the
corrector plate has thousands of microscopic pits in it that fill with
pollution based oils. Cleaning with the standard solution of alchohol and
distilled water only removes the oils from the surface not from the pits.
After time these pits fill up and when the scope is subject to moist night
air the pollutants swell and form the oily film. I can wipe the film off and
clean the corrector the next day but that night the same thing occurs all
over. I use a Kendrick dew heater but I know that this is not dew because
even a hair drier will not evaporate it. I have had this scope for 18 months
and never had this problem until last week which kind of supports the
filling pits theory.
If this theory is correct, how can I deep clean the corrector to remove
this oil and what do I use?
Thanks again to all,
Robert
