Yes. It is somewhat controversial whether you need to use the 12v to 18v
converter. But in any case, you can use any 12v battery so long as it has
enough capacity for your purposes. Don't let your battery discharge too
much unless it is a deep cycle design. That can damage it and reduce its
capacity and lifetime. And your LX200 will not be happy if the voltage
falls much below 12v. The 1812 converter puts out a constant 18v
regardless of the input voltage (until it gets very low) but the current
drain goes up to compensate. A fuse is highly recommended on BOTH sides of
the converter.
