You can remove one screw at a time without problem, don't screw the
replacement all the way in - back it out a couple of turns to allow
adjustment. I took my corrector plate off to do this, stood it with the
secondary facing down onto a soft tissue pad because I was not certain
what would happen. Precaution turned out to be un-necessary (but hey,
don't take my word for it!)

Advantage of the thumb-screws is that you can reach around and twiddle
them whilst still looking through the eyepiece.
