Dick,
The best thing would be to have an observatory in a dark site, the next
best is to have one at home unless the light pollution is really bad.
For security at my place its on the house alarm system, looks like a
garden shed and has the door frame braced so it cant be forced.
On page 116 of "The Backyard Astronomers Guide" by Dickinson and Dyer
theres a rating system for your site and a chart on the next page for
judging your limiting magnitude. I observed for about six months in the
backyard before deciding to build and by that time knew the best
location as well.
