Paul -- Polar alignment is a very sensitive adjustment. It can be
varied substancially by even the amount of Torque you use on the hold
down bolts. To get it right, (accurate enough for CCD or film
astrophotography) you may have to spend several hours going through
the proceedure. The advantage of the permanant pier mount is that
you only have to go through that time consuming process essentially
once.

I think if security worries are a problem, then a "locking" rolloff
shed about as big as an outhouse may be a better solution.
