While you're here, how about checking out the Astronomy Book List ?

OK, heres a trick that works on my OM10, and may also work on your K1000. Set
the self timer to 'on'. On the OM10 this results in the mirror going into the
lock up position, and then after the timer expires (~13s), the shutter opens.
With the camera in the B setting, the shutter of course stays open until the
cable is released. This means that I can push and set the cable release and
then just let go of the equipment while the vibration damps out. Now, to be
honest, I haven't given a go at astrophotography yet, other than piggy back
shots. I got this tip from a book on closeup photography in the field, where
camera vibration is also an issue.

It's the only way to go. Even with mirror lock-up,
one must worry about shutter vibration.
But cable releases also carry vibrations very well. One cure is a bulb
cable release, but the best way to go is the old hat trick. It will cover
all
possible problems.
