While you're here, how about checking out the Astronomy Book List ?

Gene covers the choices pretty well but I would add one
more choice for planetary work. The 16mm Brandon is very good.

Lillian,

One thing to keep in mind is that some people are recommending 1.25" diameter
eyepieces which will work with your scope, and others are recommending 2"
diameter eyepieces which will require hubby to also buy either an SCT 2"
diagonal or a 2" SCT visual back adapter and a "normal" 2" diagonal. These
are not cheap items unless you go with the 2" Meade SCT diagonal (around $100)
and before you do that, you should visit all the recommended web sites to hear
the pros and cons.

Another thing to keep in mind is how large your eye's exit pupil is, and
therefore what the maximum eyepiece focal length which will do you any good.
If you have the f/6.3 scope and stick to 1.25" eyepieces, the 26mm isn't that
far from how good it gets, maybe 32mm or 40mm maximum. If you have the f/10,
then a 40mm eyepiece is good and a 2" diameter 55mm or 56mm is better.

A final possibility which I don't use myself, but makes some sense and some
people swear by, is to get an f/6.3 reducer/corrector to change the focal
ratio from f/10 to f/6.3 or from f/6.3 to f/4, and it postpones the need for a
2" diagonal and eyepieces.

Have fun cruising the MAPUG-related web sites, and welcome to MAPUG! You're
pretty badly outnumbered by guys who want their wives to buy them eyepieces,
so don't be surprised if some of them ask you to have a talk with their wives
about how it's reasonable to expect a bunch of eyepieces, accessories, and CCD
equipment under the tree ;-)
