>From the poking around I did on the mother board a year or so ago, it appears
that the PEC info, as well as some other info like location settings, etc. is
stored in battery-backed ram. The battery in this case is the little button
cell behind the front panel. If this dies, or if because of cold temps it
doesn't provide enough voltage, the data in the ram will be lost.

While it's possible that EEPROM is used, which doesn't need backup, I didn't
see any on the board; I might have missed it, though.

If perhaps everyone having the problem can report on whether or not it was
temperature related, that will help narrow things down.
