Hi,
This is my first post, so I hope it's a good one. I had been having big
problems with my LX50's drive system (both RA and DEC) that wouldn't
seem to go away. I have the DEC gears from ScopeTronix and they helped
significantly, but didn't do the trick completely. I also ordered the
6.1 chip from Meade and it did absolutely nothing new (I was hoping it
would fix the RA retrograde motion).
Well, here's my fix idea that made a large improvement:
I thought that the axle on the DEC drive was bent because the large gear
was making a cyclic noise like: ....zzZZzz....zzZZzz....zzZZzz.... and
wobbling a bit. When I dissasembled it and rolled it on a flat surface
it was perfectly straight.
It turns out the hub that the large gear slides onto has a single allen
bolt to tighten it onto the axle with, this bolt causes the hub to tilt
slightly when tightened - creating the wobbling and noise in the
attatched gear. I slid a small square of tin foil between the axle rod
and the hub to straighten it out. When i put it back together - voila -
even speed and no wobbling (well almost none).
I hope this helps anyone who is having similar problems with their LX50
drives.
BTW: The ScopeTronix gear system is a great product and I recommend it.
Now all I have to do is get rid of this retro-motion on the RA drive!!
