Hi All,
Interesting discussion about piers. My solution was to use an 8 long,
8" diameter pipe with 1/2" walls. Its steel and is galvanized. It has a
14" square plate welded on one end and a 10" x 14" one on the other,
both being 1" thick. The smaller end is in the ground in concrete, the
exposed end is about 53" above ground. I did use a couple of hundred
pounds of sand in it as well making the whole thing with concrete about
half a ton. It is very solid.
I suggest looking at scrap metal dealers as this was only 8 cents a
pound and couldnt be touched for that price if fabricated.
A primer for galvanized paint was used and then flat black Varethane
sprayed on. It is very durable and looks as good as it did three years
ago. I also used a water based opaque black wood stain on the interior
wood walls. It is dead black and requires no prep in reapplying or
touching up, unlike paint.
Regards,
Eric
