While you're here, how about checking out the
Astronomy Book
List ? |
Tim,
When the telescope is unable to move due to some kind of binding, it
will start to draw more and more current. At some point, left unattended it
will blow the fuse...or worse.
Binding can often be cured by consulting Doc's page, and adjusting
the dec gears.
When you are able, try this test.
Using the key pad, run the telescope through the maximum dec range
that you will be using and watch the current light bars and listen to the
motor.
If the motor changes tune and if the light bars light up to 8 or
more, the gears may be binding. Doc's page will provide a description of
adjustments that can be made in just a few minutes.

<< I recently have had two occurances of a Dec problem with my new LX200
10". On both occurrances I was tracking M51 high in the sky. After an
hour or so the amp lights go from 4.5 to 7.5 or 8 and don't go back
down. The last time this happened I was not able to manually move Dec
but RA was fine (I didn't try GOTO). If I turn off the power and then
back on every things fine again. This has only happened twice, but I'm
concerned that this is not something that should be happening. >>
