The mottled appearance frequently is dried cleaning solution--these
coatings are pretty tough unlike mirror coatings. A professional
photographer I know cleans his Schmidt camera corrector plate with
Windex--try some on the edge. Don't spray it on--put a little on a soft
tissue or cotton ball after first making sure you have very gently
dusted the plate with a camel's hair brush or something similar.
