Fall, I'm finally ready to take the plunge and buy an LX200 (that's what
happens to you when you hang around here too much :)). I've had no
problems setting up a friend's 12" Meade OTA by myself, so size and weight
are not really a concern. The main use for the scope will be CCD
asteriod imaging (for astrometrical measurements). The
small premium for the 10" over the 8" makes the 10" a pretty easy choice
for me. My question is, all other things being equal, is the 12 inch
"worth" the extra financial investment (i.e. does it buy me more than aperture--a
more solid mount, for example), or am I better off investing the difference
in accessories that I can use in my general observing?. Brian

The mounts for the 10" and 12" are
identical except for a shim piece used to widen the fork for the 12" OTA.
The 12" is thus a much heavier OTA on the same mount as the lighter 10".
Thus the 12" is less well behaved mechanically than the 10". All
LX scopes have some mechanical deficencies in my opinion. Many of
these can be overcome. I have an extensive discussion of the mechanical
and electrical concerns for the LX scopes on my web site.
