While you're here, how about checking out the Astronomy Book List ?

Doug,
I have had a 100mm size version of one of these for several years on my
LX's.
I took advice from thousand oaks themselves to buy only a small filter not a
large one as it is not necessary. I had to make a collar to mount it using a
plywood disc with an off center hole for the filter. This goes on to the lx
like the dew cap plate.Around the front of the LX itself is a wide groove.
Plastic screws are screwed into this to make sure the mounting collar for
the filter is secure for safety reasons.I have heard of other people buying
a spare dew cover from meade and converting that.Because the filter is small
it fits my refractor as well. The filter performance removes any possible
damage to you or the scope as long as the filter is not defective ie pin
holes or something else. There has to be more care with these as they are
glass not mylar. I have found them to be rugged and reliable up to now but
even so I still check mine thoroughly before use.
The mounting of these filters to allow expansion and the quality of the
mount is very important. If you are not practical at this sort of thing make
sure that you pay for somebody to mount one or buy a properly mounted
version to match the scope exactly.
After that it is only training yourself in the motions of fitting it and
removing it in the correct order away from the sun.

Mapug List,
I have a question about solar filters and solar viewing.
I have the 10" LX200. I am considereing the purchase of a ThousandOaks
solar filter. My questions are these:
- Is there any reason, either practically or from a warranty
perspective, that would discourage me from solar viewing?
- would you recommend the ThousandOaks brand or are there others equally
as good or better?
- would you recommend a full aperture filter or is an off-axis style
just as good (it certainly is cheaper)
Thanks for anything you can offer.
