While you're here, how about checking out the
Astronomy Book
List ? |
This is my first posting on this forum, howdy y'all!
I just purchased the above scope, and love it so far.
However, I was a little disturbed to find so many web pages
devoted to fixing it's shortcomings. I figured, for $900ish
bucks for the scope I can afford to fix it's various little
idiosyncrasies.
I disassembled the polar axis of the mount last night to clean
out all the Civil War-era axle grease they chose to use and
found a major flaw. The clutch pressure plate was warped. I
determined that the three holes in the plate through which the
tensioning screws are threaded were not drilled at the correct
radius from the center of the plate. They are close enough to
get the screws started if the plate is suspended just below the
heads of the screws, but progressively tightening the three
screws eventually induces sufficient stress on the pressure
plate to distort it's shape - not too conducive to achieving
even pressure distribution on the clutch. Sigh.
I called Meade Support this morning, ready for a fight. The
customer rep was astonishingly agreeable, accepted my analysis
of the problem, and said he would get a new plate in the mail
right away. Wow! Microsoft could use some support people like
him!
Are there any other Starfinder EQ owners out there? Got any
horror stories to tell? So far, MAPUG looks like nothing but
SCT owners...
