Competition has nothing to do with it. The price of a good astro camera
just isn't going to come down anytime soon. The consumer market, which
is the lion's share of the damand for CCD chips, is demanding more and
more pixels on the same size/smaller chip. These chips are low QE, low
well depth and have very high dark current. The exact opposite of what
we need.
Let's face it. The astrophotography market isn't worth a glance to
the imaging manufacturers, whether CCD or emulsion. If they happen
to produce a product that fits our needs, great. But not a whole lot
of resources are going to be expended chasing such a minuscule amount
of sales.
