While you're here, how about checking out the
Astronomy Book
List ? |
Hi thanks for your reply
To answer a few of your remarks:
1. If the mount is properly aligned the telescope will NOT move over
90 degree dec. So in normal operation I will never have a problem.
(not anymore atleast, because before I had a different adaptor ring
which was too long so the telescope hit fork before it comes to 90
degrees dec, and not after as now is the case). The only circumstance
where the telescope will hit the fork, is if the telescope is started
with in the wrong alingnemt. THis can happen if the brakes have
slipped somewhat last time (when reusing the old alignment) or if an
error has been made during alignment. As this telescope will be used
by students I need a better FOOL proof method.
2. There already exists software which will limit the movements of the
scope (SKYMAP PRO or THE SKY not sure) but this can only limit the
ENDING POINT of the movement, and does not check intermediate stages.
Then again this should never be a problem for dec limiting, only for
az. restrictions.
3. The Goto button on the keypad will also stop the movement. The
problem is that we are also controlling the scope by computer, and
then the keypad might not be in range.
Lastly u are correct that when shutting down the telescope with the
off switch there is no protection mechanism, but what I meant was
pulling the plug! I had to do that once, as i could not reach the off
switch as the fork was blocking it!!!. When i had pulled the plug the
scope refused to turn on for +- 10 mins. As I was planning to use the
same brute method for my panic button, I would very much like to know
if this is a safe method.
With Kind regrads.
P.S. I will post my last message also on the sbig list
