Hi, Jim:
I have both the wedge for polar alignment and the derotator. I used the
derotator only a few times because it is limited to areas well away from the
zenith. So I think your third question (about better coverage) is the most
important: you are MUCH more limited using the derotator than with polar
alignment. Furthermore, for reasonable exposure durations (45 minutes or
less) I've found that the iterative alignment procedure described in the
Meade manual and improved upon by Chris Vedeler and many others (see MAPUG
archive) is quite adequate for good images. The other point, already made by
someone else, is that you WILL want to do piggyback photography and that
can't be done with a derotator.
