Well... it centroids the unfocussed mush so that you can focus.
Perhaps this is what is meant by "searching" for the star. It certainly
does not control the scope in "find and focus" mode. At least
my two year old unit doesn't.
For an updated state diagram, go to <http://surf.to/Brewster> and bonk
on "Procedures for set-up and observing". The 201XT stuff is just
about the last thing on this page.
