While you're here, how about checking out the
Astronomy Book
List ? |
I've noticed Ralph's excellent reply a little later so I won't go over that.
All I wanted to say is that the only issue here is whether the display can
tell you what you need to know - i.e., what quality image you have (focus,
exposure, tracking, level of detail). All the auto-display functions do is
make it a little easier for you to assess image quality whilst imaging
_without_ having to adjust display parameters on an individual basis, none
of these settings change the actual image data at all.
I've played with these display parameters myself but now prefer to set it to
span 99% of all pixels, I much prefer to look critically at the histogram,
set the levels manually, and rely on the 'Sticky Enhancement' to repeat
those display settings for subsequent images of that object.
Consider: if the auto-display worked perfectly then you would get a
seemingly perfect, well-balanced image for a very wide range well depths
(exposure times) - even for some that are under exposed. I would encourage
you instead to look at the histogram rather than rely on any auto-display
systems.
