While you're here, how about checking out the Astronomy Book List ?

Yes My converter was a simple grey RJ to serial converter. The cables
were just rolled up inside, and over time one of there pins (of course
the 12v lead, touched the serial ground casing, which caused the
short.

I dont recommend cutting the loose wires, as one might still have a
problem, I just completely pulled the unused wires.
What I do blame MEADE for is that the manual states that only 3 wires
are used. It says that the 12v lead is UNUSED, but it is still LIVE!
They should have defenitly said or done something about that.
