While you're here, how about checking out the Astronomy Book List ?

Guys,

I find that I am in the market for a replacement for my SkyPro program. It
has been a rocky road so far, but I have found workarounds for the several
problems with the program...... until now. Unfortunately, I now need to
take GIF or BMP files and save them as JPEGs for my web site. For some
reason that Bisque doesn't want to get into, SkyPro refuses to save a JPEG
file that any software other than itself can read correctly. I have
cooresponded with Software Bisque and they basically said that I should
give them $99 for an upgrade to CCDSoft, which they "assume" (their words)
will work OK on JPEGs. While I appreciate the benefits of upgrading
software, I think this response to a genuine problem with a product is
utter nonsense.

So I need some image processing recommendations.... My requirements are
simple. I need the ability to work with 8 and 24 bit color (BMP, GIF,
JPEG) as well as 16 bit monochrome (FITS). I need the ability to do
sharpen, unsharp, and smooth, as well as view and change the histogram and
transfer function. The custom filter feature in SkyPro is nice. I also
appreciate the ability in SkyPro to open more than one file with a single
mouse click.

So what are your favorite programs? Maxim D/L looks good. What else is
out there? Affordability would be a plus too....
