Yes, of course it can. I've done it many times. What the LX200 can
NOT do is GOTO the Sun (or any object near it). This is presumably a
"safety" feature but it's easy to get around by simply pointing the
scope manually. What I usually do is look at the shadow of the scope
and try to make it as small as possible. Then I remove the eyepiece
and slew around until I see the Sun. All with the solar filter on,
of course! and the finder scope capped (or removed).
