While you're here, how about checking out the
Astronomy Book

Hi nice to meet you
I would advice you not to use the Canon Eos 500. I have the same camera,
and when I wanted to use if for astrophotography I found out that the
electronoc shutter needs the battery to stay open. This means that u can
expect to use a new battery every 30 minutes (or that's what the specs
say)
As these batteries are quite expensive (prob. $10-$20) this would not be
a very economical hobby. I got an old nikormat camera for my
astrophotography needs.
Sorry to disappoint u.
