For aligning, I found the "Scope Saver" table to be well worth the
money. It attaches to the tripod head with three screws, using the
existing holes. I seldom remove it from the tripod. The registration
bumpers on it get the scope close to perfectly positioned. The scope can
be moved around just a bit within the confines of the bumpers. This
makes it easier to plop the scope down on the table. You can mark the
"perfect" position on the table.
To me, the benefit of having your eyepieces right at hand is at least as
big of a benefit as the ease of alignment.
Several vendors have this item in their ads in S&T and Astronomy.
