While you're here, how about checking out the Astronomy Book List ?

Joe Torelli asks:

"Do you think it would be okay to make two holes like a Hartman
Mask and
cover those with a solar mylar film? I would think this might help with
focusing. Would it be two much light?"

My dew-shield filter design is intended, eventually, to have a rotating
element and an inner element with two off-axis holes. The outer
element would have an off-axis solar filter and two clear holes to
register with the inner holes, forming a Hartman mask. There is no
reason why there should not be two solar filters as you describe. I
don't think that light levels would be a problem, since you could be
using a full-aperture mask and still be OK. You can always fit filters
to the eyepiece, which give better colour rendering than the Baader
film alone. I will have to devise a fail-safe method of locking the
solar filter configuration in place. It's amazing what you can do with
Daler Board and Thixofix!
