While you're here, how about checking out the Astronomy Book List ?

Jay,
I'm not in the construction business, nor do I play it in the movies,
but if I remember in all of my readings and research, in everything I've
ever learned about concrete, the key to reinforced concrete was a) that the
concrete was mixed properly, and b) that no rebar or other steel members
were exposed, because of eventual rust and disintegration, leading to
premature failure. Granted, we aren't building load rated bridges or oil
rig caissons, but driving rebar into surrounding soil goes against all I've
ever learned. Is this a new development, or is the fact that the rebar is
1" make eventual rustout so far into the future it is a moot point? If so,
how far and how many? What good does this do? Is the soil eventually so
compacted that it is able to grip the rebar as concrete does?

Thanks,
Mike
