I'm making a serial cable to go from my Magellan II to my laptop. Does
anyone know how long, maximum, that I can make the cable?
David C Brune
If you mean serial rs232...
We regularly used to run 200 ft cables for rs232 at speeds up to 9600 baud
using 3 core 3 amp mains cable here years ago with standard drivers. As used
in PC's.With power drivers using power op amps you can go up to half a mile
at 4800 baud. The cable capacitance causes the problems especially at the
very high speeds such as 56k baud where cable lengths are cut down to
several feet as a nmaximum.
So roughly
9600 baud 200 ft
18200 100 ft
36400 30 ft
56000 6 ft
