If you are trying to make a straight through cable (ie., pin 1 to pin 1,
etc.) the colors should be in the same sequence when the connectors are
placed side by side with the cables exiting the same direction. If the
colors line up one for one with the connectors placed end to end they are
wired as crossover.

Been there, been fooled myself!
