Although not the theme of this thread, a 125 mm 'scope mounted on a more
robust mount probably could show most of what's in the database with a
CCD attached, maybe even in Chicago?
I have a 10" LX200, live on the outskirts of London, and I can tell you
that even with a 10" I can only visually see a fraction of what's in the
64,000 feature database. Stick a CCD on the back and it's a different
story :)
I wouldn't mind betting that the 125 mm under truly dark skies would
visually show more than my 10" from my location :(
Even my 10x70 Fujinon's did that from dark skies in France. I couldn't
believe how much of M31 I could see (3-4 degs) compared to the small
fuzzy blob through my LX200 at home!
I guess the GOTO features available on many commercial scopes have
introduced more people, often just casual observers, to the wonders of
the nightsky than any other "innovation" so why knock it! These are
great times for the amateur astronomer with so many technical
breakthroughs commercially available that were previously just in the
domain of professionals. Well, if we could get someone to switch all
the damn lights off!
Let's all have fun,
Graham
