If TV shops still have degaussing coils (large coils used to de-magnetize
the shadow mask in a color CRT), try taking the tripod to a TV shop and ask
to borrow their degaussing coil. Pass it all over the tripod and if it's
big enough, pass it over the tripod head. Do all this slowly, and make
sure the coil is far away when you turn it off. And of course, make sure
the compass is removed for this procedure!
