Hi Frank
had no reply I'm not sure whether you have received it, so I'll post it
here again at Mapug in the hope that you will pick it up.
Despite the replacement of the strip on the focuser rail we are still
not entirely satisfied with the images we are getting from our Meade
152.
Initially we thought all was well, but at higher magnifications we still
have a "v-shaped" flare off to one side of star point images.
We would be pleased if you could let as have some details of a source
for the strips, as we will be in USA from January 29 to February 12. We
will then be able to obtain them.
You say you overhauled a Meade 178 from top to bottom. If you can offer
any useful tips for us as to what your procedure was, we would be
eternally grateful.
Our 152 was very good at the start of its life (bought new from Meade)
in Australia in 1998. Unless in our inexperience in astronomy we were
not aware of faults !!
When we became aware of the problem with "flare" from stars, early
advice from the MAPUG group suggested that the six push-pull screws at
the objective were likely to be the problem, and possibly the three
lateral screws. With help from our friend in the ASV, using a laser we
have adjusted the push-pull screws to our satisfaction. The three
lateral set screws do not achieve any actual alteration of the
positional relationship of the two lenses to one another. The 3 screws
are either tight or not tight. Loosening one and tightening the other
two does not achieve anything as far as we can tell. Perhaps you can
advise on this ?
If the objective pair at the front of the telescope are perpendicular to
the tube and the focuser at the rear is "on axis", what else can be
wrong ?
TIA
And kind regards
John and Jan Barker
