While you're here, how about checking out the Astronomy Book List ?

Hello Michael

I'm using a Macintosh iBook with a LX200 and "The Sky for Macintosh". Like
your Powerbook, the iBook has no serial port but does have a USB port. I
purchased the The Keyspan USB to serial converter which works well. The
cable was not too difficult to manufacture - with some help from Bill
Arnett's web site which details nice and clearly the connections for both
the Mac end (i.e. from the DIN 8 socket of your adapter box) and the LX200
end. Go to:
http://www.seds.org/billa/meade/cable.html

Should work just as well for Starry Night Pro as it does with The Sky. Great
fun!

Hello,

Been lurking on the board for a while and now my LX200 has finally arrived.
I'm running Starry Night Pro on a new 400Hz G3 PowerBook. I want to use the
plug-in provided with Starry Night to communicate with the LX200, but it's a
major pain with respect to cables. I've seen numerous posts regarding Mac
cables for the LX200 but they all assume the Mac has a serial comm port
(i.e., modem or printer port). The new G3 PowerBook only has a pair of USB
ports and an ethernet port (has a SCSI but that's already earmarked for use
by my CCD).

Has anyone successfully purchased or manufactured a cable to connect the USB
port to the LX200 RS232 port. I purchased a USB to Serial converter box
which uses a mini DIN 8 plug to connect the USB converter to a cable for
serial devices, but I'm having all kinds of problems with the darn thing. I
tried to reverse-engineer the cable knowing that all I really need at the 6
conductor RJ11 plug going into the LX200 are three signals...RxD (receive),
TxD (transmit) and GND (ground). But I don't know what the pin-out is on the
USB-serial converter mini DIN 8 port.

Help!!

Aloha...Michael Clary
