While you're here, how about checking out the
Astronomy Book
List ? |
Hi Bob.
Last night my 5 year old daughter came running into the kitchen and told me
that the sky was turning colors. She told me that it was an "awra borys"
that I told her about. (I have been teaching her astronomy, trying to get
her interested in the sky and such. She evidentially remembered my "lesson"
on the Aurora Borealis.) I thought to myself "Hmmm, that DOES sounds like
an aurora." However, being at 41°09'59" I highly doubted that I was
imagining the correct explanation. After stepping outside, there was NO
doubt that I was seeing one of the most spectacular auroral displays I have
ever witnessed. After it had subsided, I did some research and found that
this had been predicted. I see from your post to MAPUG this morning that
you mentioned a NASA notification. Was it automatically sent to you? How
can I sign up to receive these notifications? It seems I missed the most
intense portion of the phenomenon, though I was glad to have seen it at all.
Not many aurora in the New York suburban night skies you know. I appreciate
any info you (or any other MAPUGer may provide. I checked out the STD Solar
and Geophysical E-Mail, but they charge for a subscription. I'm SURE there
must be plenty of free services out there.
Thanks in advance,
Scott
P.S. - Sorry to hear about your scope. You have my wishes for a speedy
repair and more clear skies coming your way.
