While you're here, how about checking out the Astronomy Book List ?

Yes, I can definitely confirm the ability to be fried via communication
lines.

Not a telescope, but computerised shed environment control systems connected
by an in-ground phone line. (Shielded, 800mm below ground, 300mm below a 3mm
copper earth wire.)

We had completely disconnected from the mains during one storm but a local
ground strike came in via the comm line with enough strength to blow things
off walls.

Lesson learned - comm lines are now protected too.
