fine. Then, on Sun afternoon, I decided to set up my scope for the last
evening. I noticed that the tangent arm was almost at the end of its travel
and so I went to center it. It seemed tight, but I managed to turn it a few
turns with the fine adjust after tightening the set screw in the fine
adjust knob. Eventually, I managed to lock it up so that now I can't budge
it at all! Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

Try slackening the pinch bolt at the bottom of the tangent arm to get it free.
