While you're here, how about checking out the
Astronomy Book

Bob:
I presume your not happy with the bubble level on the superwedge.
This question on leveling the wedge was the catalyst to modify the wedge. I
checked the wedge out on a CMM (coordinate measuring machine), the first
thing that I discovered was that the bottom plate was warped. Knowing this by
its self, I new I could never level the wedge with any degree of accuracy.
The problem was, yes I could take down the high points that cause the warp,
but the circular attachment point under the wedge was were level is
transferred from the tripod.
This is only good if the plate is FLAT and as stated it was warped!
Now that I have opened a can of worms, every one is thinking is there wedge
OK, and this goes for any wedge brand.
For the wedge to work as designed, you need to understand what square and
perpendicularity are.
This leads to the question what is acceptable and what is not, and any angle
introduced into the wedge ether by warp or out of parallelism subtracts from
the telescopes ability to point at celestial objects to that same proportion.
I believe a lot of LX owners have blamed the mechanics of the scope, when the
problem has been out of LEVEL conditions.
For those of you that love trigonometry, do a sample problem with an angle
equivalent to give you a side opposite of .001" with a side adjacent of 8".
Now knowing that very very small angle do it again with a side adjacent of
10' & 100' , very quickly you will get the picture. The reason for doing the
first problem at 8" is this is close to the diameter of the top attachment
point on the tripod.
I have ramble too much already, There is a fairly good FIX to this problem
and will explain it on my web page, if I ever get it running.
