While you're here, how about checking out the

The "Brand X" is the Celestron 14" SCT...often called the C-14. Several
months ago, when this poster asked the same question, I suggested that he
look into the C-14 as a likely alternative. I offered this suggestion for
the following reasons:
(1) The seeing power gained by moving to a 12" SCT from a 10" Newt is small
and hardly worth the expense of the change. I say this because the 10" Newt
has a smaller central obstruction than an SCT and is a more efficient
telescope design which squanders less light.
(2) The seeing power gained by moving from a 10" Newt to a 14" SCT is
greater and far more dramatic...simply because the 14 has a considerably
larger aperture.
(3) The new version C-14 offers a tremendous plus for imagers with Fastar
compatibility. In about 2 minutes, the standard F/11 optical system of the
C-14 can be converted to a very efficient F/2 optical system. This is
accomplished simply be removing (unscrewing) the secondary mirror and
replacing it with the Fastar Lens. It's that easy...no collimation is
required. The results of Fastar are that exposure times are reduced to
about 1/25th the exposure times using the standard F/11 optical system.
This translates to capturing very nice images of some very dim objects with
NO GUIDING REQUIRED.
I own a 10" and I also own a C-14. I can tell you, with no reservations,
that the "seeing" difference between the 10" and the C-14 will knock your
socks off.
