you are thinking of the coax-based networks, or 10BaseT using the older
cat-3 cable. using cat-5 cable, either 10BaseT or 100BaseT you can go 1000
meters. i thought this was impossible, so i put an RJ45 on each end of a
2500 foot spool, and tried it. worked fine. amazing.

correct. but 100BaseT uses all 8. and as cheap as the 100 Mbit equipment
is, and as much as it improves performance, it is inevitable that it will
be used.
