Our experience is that anymore cat-7 wire is less money than cat-5 because the industry is moving to cat-7 so the cost savings is there. With the right adapters you should be able to go at 100 M bits easily with either and make response quite good.

David,
>ethernet, on the other hand, has a limit of one kilometer, about 3000 feet.
this rather strongly suggests that you should put a computer at the
telescope and control it remotely over ethernet.
Without repeaters, 10BaseT only goes to 100m I thought? Obviously 10Base2 and
10Base5 are longer. Seems like this guy was talking 10BaseT though. Still
should be enough for his 200 ft.
>wire is very cheap compared to the other parts of the system, and compared
to having to install more wire later. i would suggest at least two cat-5
cables, because 10BaseT uses all 8 conductors, and a spare cable is
worthwhile insurance.
I definitely agree this is cheap insurance. But 10BaseT does not use all 8
conductors. It uses ONLY 1,2, 3, and 6 wires in the 8 wire conductor. Often
when I didnt have the "insurance" of an extra cable (or an extra hub), Id make
two rj45 taps off one cable (on both ends).
