While you're here, how about checking out the Astronomy Book List ?

Allan,

Thanks for your input on replacing your collimation screws. One observation
that I would like to interject here regarding the procedure that you
mention. You collimate an awful lot during the screw replacement. It has
been my experience that replacing the Mead screws with thumbscrews from
McMaster-Carr simplifies collimation to such a great extent that even if the
telescope is way out of collimation, it takes little time to bring it back
into critical collimation. I would say there is little need for
recollimating during the replacement of the screws. Simply replace the
screws and then recollimate the telescope. Every erg saved in maintenance
is an erg that can be spent observing.

Belated Happy Solstice Everyone,
Phil Freeman
